Sherman's March to the Sea

This course provides an overview to General William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea. We will review both the Atlanta and North Carolina campaigns. We will discuss Sherman’s overall strategic and tactical plans; follow the army through the long march; and learn how soldiers adapted to this new type of campaigning. We will examine the Union armies’ relationships with southern whites and blacks. We will also consider the ways that Sherman and his march are remembered after the war.
