Expert Systems have been in use for decades in many varied fields. They are used to taking existing knowledge to solve complex problems by using an IF, THEN set of rules. These systems emulate how individuals think and make decisions. They are used extensively in the field of medicine. Through this class you will learn how Expert Systems are created, their strengths, and their weaknesses. You will learn the nomenclature, such as forward chaining and backward chaining, so you will be able to communicate with those creating systems that surround us. This class is designed to assist you in developing an appreciation for creating the inference engines and knowledge bases used in implementing the systems. Together we will develop a simple expert system. No prior programming knowledge is required. All you need to bring to class is the desire to expand your knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
