Community Health Worker MIC GRANT ONLY   

Community Health Workers (CHW) are important frontline public health workers who are a trusted member of and/ or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. A community health worker also builds individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy. Are you ready to improve access to care by building bridges between health and social services to the community? If so, this program is for you. Join ICC Corporate and Community Education for this 6 week certification course, held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Included is 12 sessions of online instruction and discussion on the following topics:

• The primary role of the CHW

• The role CHW's have in public health & healthcare

• Ethics in public health and healthcare

• Cultural competence

• Client & community assessment

• Health education for behavior change

• Outreach strategies for CHW's

• Supporting the client & health systems navigation

• Individual & community capacity building & motivation

• Participatory methods in community research

• Impact of chronic Illness

• CHW role in home visitation
